Whoo-hoo! If you back up a few posts, you'll find an entry titled, "Writing Woes." My research into ways of inspiring my 11-year-old to write yielded a section from Scholastic.com that I hadn't noticed before. It's called Writing with Writers. Kyle was sitting with me as I searched through the page. Suddenly, he said, "Wait!" and got all excited. You would have thought he saw a new Lego ad. Instead, there was a button for learning how to write myths with the advice of a mythical writer. Ooh...that didn't come out correctly! I mean an author who writes myths! He's been into Greek myths lately and decided immediately that he wanted to write his own. "Have at it!" I said.
So, he wrote his own Greek myth and the whole story itself made me smile. The kid definitely has great ideas. Now, if only we could do something about the spelling! Ugh! We are going to edit it tonight and submit it to the site to (hopefully) be posted.
Apart from writing myths, there are tutorials from writers on news writing, essay writing, etc.
The next topic he's going to try is science writing. He has to come up with a science-related question, then research it, and finally, present his hypothesis as a science report. So, we'll see how that goes.
Anyway, I hope these Scholastic links will help you to inspire your kids, too.
